PHENOMENAL class. You will learn so much history behind the world's current state by exploring topics like 9/11, the modern Middle East, the Iraq War, Brexit, Climate change, 2016 election, etc. The reader for this class is addicting - you will WANT to read. Thank you, Professor O'Connor, for showing me the true advantages of studying history.
History 5 is interesting. Each week there is a guest lecturer for various topics, supplemented by a lecture given by Prof O'Connor. Honestly, if you skim the PowerPoints and do ALL of the readings in the reader, you'll have no difficulty getting an A in this class. The guest lecturers vary, so expect to be both inspired and bored.
tough
5 books plus articles and book excerpts online. You won't pass if you don't read! The class was interesting and the material was good. She's nice and lectures well but way too much reading plus a presentation and 3 short essays a midterm and final. I won't take her again.
Such an interesting class. There is a ton of reading, but a lot of it is very helpful. She can seem a little vague, but get the slides and explanation down and it will all come together. Your hand will cramp for the midterm and final. Be specific, she wants you to know who wrote what. There was one group project
I'm surprised at all of the positive reviews. Although the material is pretty interesting she is clearly biased politically, she's a boring lecturer, and the final was pretty difficult (she expected us to write so much in so little time). She definitely isn't the worst professor I've had but I won't take a class from her again.
O'Connor is like a grandma telling stories from the old country; sometimes it can put you to sleep, and sometimes it'll keep you thinking. A somewhat difficult class to take if you're not familiar with the way the UCSB history department works, but worth taking to learn more.
Interesting class - you'll understand how current events were made. 2 short and 1 long essay, 1 midterm & final were both in class essays/ short answers. In order to get an A, you had to read most of the reader and definitely had to attend lectures. Copy what she says, not just slide text. I did more work for this class than for an UD Hist class
Very useful class and good presentation by professor every time. Professor Hough was really helpful too.
Very enthusiastic professor who cares very much about what she is teaching. Class was extremely interesting with guest lecturers and her own lecturers. However, her powerpoint design could use some work. Light yellow text is not good!
You can tell she really cares about what she is teaching, very enthusiastic. Lots of reading, but as long as you stay on top of it and go to lecture it's definitely not so bad.
Very interesting class. Abstract though. would only recommend for history majors and those who are used to upper division history. Papers and midterms are hard.
She's very passionate and loud for such a little woman, but the class was extremely boring. If you're interested in current events and the historical reasoning behind them and i mean REALLY interested then take the class. There were 2 papers, and essays for both the midterm and final.
Dope class take Hist 5
This class was amazing because we got to study current events (such as the war in Iraq) and compare them to events in the past. It was very inciteful, and Prof. O'Connor is a great lecturer, and there were weekly guest lecturers that were good as well. The class does require alot of reading, but it's worth it.
She is fully dope and extremly intellegent I learned a lot in her class stick with sister carrie esp women would take anything from her
The best professor I've ever had. Definately would take more classes with her. She's so passionate and cool! I looked forward to every class and sat up front. Throughly entertaining. Class is a little difficult but interesting.
She's cool peeps, she offer extra credit, and she gives better grades than the TAs.
Amazing professor. She's passionate and it really shows through. Interesting and entertaining lectures. Class begins with the 1920's and goes through the present. There is a lot a reading, but for the most part it's all pretty interesting. Only one 5-8 page paper.
Awesome teacher, very approachable and knowledgable..best history class here! she loves to dance and gets dissapointed if we dont dance along! so make sure to get up and do the YMCA in the 8th week! SOOO FUN and I have learned soo much!! Best history professor here!
Great teacher. So animated and loves what she is doing. Its hard to find teachers as passionate as she is. Class is so informative and pertains to everyday life!
Amazing professor...lectures were awesome...very highly recommended...she is a great orator and is totally not boring at all...best prof ive had yet
She is still the BEST professor I've had at this campus. Her love for history is contagious and her lectures are not to be missed. They are exciting, fun and of course educational. Take a course with her! The Readings are great!
Really great class!
