Professor Shewry was amazing! I loved the content of the class, even though it was a lot of reading. It was challenging at times, but it definitely helped me improve my skills as a writer. As an English major, I definitely look forward to taking more classes with her in the future.
Professor Shewry is one of my fav English professors at ucsb. She is such a sweet person and she's really knowledgeable/passionate about the content. The readings can sometimes accumulate but other than that it is a relatively manageable class.
Very sweet professor. Extremely understanding about late work and willing to accommodate students. Lecture slides are posted online, readings are easy and often interesting, quizzes are super easy. Grading is fair.
Super kind and fun professor who is also very accommodating. From what I can remember, we had 3 quizzes (she dropped the lowest score) and 2 papers that were relatively short (1 4page and 1 8page). Attendance isn't mandatory and you can find most of the novels online. 10/10 recommend!
I loved Shewry's class and decided to pick up an English minor because of it! I appreciated that the readings were actually interesting (besides Lord of the Rings). We were graded on section participation, 3 reading quizzes, and 2 papers that were all graded very easily. She also gave out prizes to students with creative answers during lecture.
Best lecturer I've had at UCSB in 5 years. Great for DSP students and queer students.
Engl 122FE was probably my favorite class that I've taken at UCSB. Professor Shewry is a wonderful lecturer and facilitates a lot of class discussion. Even online I didn't feel like I was missing out on the experience of the class. She gives great feedback and allows a lot of space for creativity in papers and assignments.
I loved this class! Even with it being online, it was really well planned and enjoyable. The pre-recorded lectures were never too long and were engaging. There was a good mix of films and readings. You can tell this professor really cares about the content of the course and I always appreciate that!
An amazing class, highly recommend to anyone. She gave amazing lectures and the material of the class was very interesting. We read harry potter and other fantasy works. Had to do weekly posts and questions and two papers but wasn't bad otherwise. 10/10 recommend.
An amazing professor. The quizzes were easy as long as you did the readings and paid attention in class, and she drops the lowest quiz score to make your life easier. She is super nice and really cares for her students and what she is teaching. No midterm exam or final exam. Just 2 papers so if you can write essays well, you should be fine.
Such a sweetheart. Class was a little too easy in my opinion, but it was a nice repose from my more difficult classes
Shewry is such a sweet little gem and her class is so easy. Graded by two papers and three in class quizzes. She really does her best to make the material fun and interesting.
Interesting class with manageable reading and very little actual course work. There's two papers, and no midterm or final but a few reading quizzes. Attendance is taken but actual consideration of participation is minimal as i never spoke in class but wrote two solid papers and aced the reading quizzes and came out with an A. Take this class.
Although this class was one of the easiest classes I've taken at UCSB, it was also one of the most boring. The material itself was interesting but it got too meta a lot of the time. The readings were fine but you could easily zone out and still pass. No surprises for 3 quizzes. A midterm and final paper each 4-6 pages.
ENGL122 was a great class. The readings were very interesting and they are easy to manage. The essay prompts were interesting as well and gave a lot of choice as to what readings you want to include in them. Would highly recommend this class.
Really excellent class! This class and its materials were way more interesting than I anticipated. Shewry is sweet, soft-spoken, and one of the nicest professors I've encountered at UCSB and she's generous w/ grading. There are pop quizzes but as long as you keep up with attendance, you don't really have to keep up with readings to do well.
Prof. Shewry was a phenomenal teacher. Probably one of my favorites from the English department. I took her Water Imaginations class and it was very enlightening and unique!
Shewry is an amazing professor - she's so kind and understanding, and so easy to approach. She's a bit soft-spoken, but has a cute New Zealand accent! She's very organized, and is a fair grader. There are weekly quizzes to make sure you've read, but they're ridiculously easy if you have, and the books are pretty interesting. Take this class!
Professor Shewry was really cool. Overall I found the readings more interesting than the three books, but in general the material was easy to follow. Put in the work and you will do well.
Professor Shewry is a wonderful teacher. She has not midterm or final but grades on participation (like raise your hand cuz she writes down who participates) She has quizzes and two papers. Do well on papers and you will do well in class. She has a soft voice so sit up front. She has a great selection of material to read, great lectures too.
Best professor at UCSB! She really takes the time to give thoughtful feedback on your work. There are weekly reading quizzes but they are so easy if you did the reading. The rest of your grade is participation, a midterm paper (4 pages) and a final paper (7 pages). The readings and films in this class were very interesting as was class discussion.
Hands down the best teacher I've ever had in my life. She was sweet, kind, caring and inspirational. One of the few teachers I've had that really cares about the students.
Awesome professor. Sweet, straight forward, very helpful. Genuinely cares about the students, grades fairly and all around awesome class with a great selection of reading. Recommend 100% even for non-English majors, no midterm or final, just short/easy weekly reading quizzes, and a paper for midterm and final that were about 4-5 pages each I think.
She is so friendly and always willing to help students. No midterm, no final. Just a final research paper and small writing assignments. Actually cares about students as she reads your paper and writes commentary back. Definitely the best English professor!
