Loved this class! Professor Morales lectures were both entertaining and informative. 2 papers, 2 midterms a final and a couple of section assignments all of which were fairly straightforward. My only critique would be that I wished she had been more specific on the prompts for the papers since she does not really talk about those subjects in class.
You either love or you hate her, and I was fortunate enough to be the former. Her lectures are incredibly interesting, as well as the text, and she really wants everyone to succeed. As long as you do the reading and pay attention in lecture(although attendance is not taken), you will do very well in this class. I wish I could take this class again!
Professor Morales expects high quality work, well-researched ideas and frequent in-class participation. If you do not take one of her classes, you are missing out on an opportunity to become a better Classics Major and a higher caliber student. Take CLASS 185 with Professor Morales before you graduate, it will make your undergraduate experience!
Professor Morales offers a unique and interesting perspective on the ancient world.
This seminar is definitely the hardest class ive ever taken @ UCSB, but thats b/c this class is designed to be 1 of the last you take in the major. Consisted of a research paper & presentation in front of the department. It was incredibly rewarding & I learned more than I ever have in a class before. So glad I took it w/ Morales. Fave prof ever!
She was a solid professor who gave entertaining lectures. Unfortunately, she scares you into doing most of the reading, but the tests aren't reflective of the reading. They're entirely based on the lectures, down to details you might think are trivial. Any reading questions are on over-arching plot. If you take good lecture notes, it's pretty easy.
Assigns a lot of reading, but I got by reading just the summaries online. In section, 2 close readings are assigned PNP but you can resubmit until you pass. A paper is due at the final. Her tests compose of the general idea of the reading and ideas she presents in lecture so take good notes.
This prof gets props on her knowledge. She knows her stuff and, yes, she has the academic pedigree. Understand that if she likes you you're in, or your done. Kiss your academic career goodbye. After enduring her lectures I wonder if this woman actually thinks she lives in ancient Greece? She surely judges us according to those anachronistic ideals.
Pretentious teacher. Lectures are important. Take good notes! Barely read the textbooks. There is an online PDF of her VSI. Section quizzes 5x the quarter. She doesn't post your grades on gauchospace. Her midterm was easy but her final is much more difficult. Easy GE.
The whole class is very weirdly structured. Look for another professor if you really want this class. You will no clue what your grade is until it's too late.
Morales is one of the hardest Greek Myth teachers at the university, and I would not recommend this class if you're expecting an easy A. She assigns so much overwhelming reading, but if you're caught up then you're good to go! It's extremely important that you attend all her lectures. It also helps if you have a good TA (Cooke was the worst).
Horrible professor. Constantly teaches wrong information and relies on her head TA to correct her. My TA was a new classics student and didn't know what she was doing either.Teaches stories that are already commonly known from high school (Antigone, The Odyssey, Oedipus). Clearly feminist based. Is no help for office hours and is very rude.
Chill enough. Go to lecture. Everything on the midterm and final are on the slides, but she won't put them online. The readings are typically short and simple. She's overly feminist and preachy about it, but whatever. No essays or papers. 5 quizzes, lowest score dropped. Final has an essay section, but she gives the prompts in advance to prepare.
Her lectures are fast-paced and her slides are useless. She refuses to put her slides online, based on the assumption that "delinquents" will use this to "ruin their learning." She also treats her students like 5-year-olds. Finally, she has managed to make Greek myth (literally the most interesting GE available) into a boring subject.
One of the worst teachers I've had, she constantly gets information wrong and relies on her TA's to do literally all of the work for her. Focuses heavily on feminism and manages to avoid myth altogether while being as politically incorrect as possible. Everything she says is an underdeveloped stretch where she rants about something stupid. Awful.
Easy class..pay att.. go to class everyday, take good notes.... ADVICE...i would read the intro to the books she gives because she gets the terms for the test from there, and you dont have to read the rest of the book haha....LOVE HER and hope to take more of her classes
I dont understand why people say shes a hard teacher because shes not...... Just go to class...cause she goes over everything and take good notes....if you listen and pay attention itll be an easy class overall and enjoyable. Advice...read the intro to the books she assigns, alot of course terms are on their that are helpful for tests
Professor Morales expects alot from all students. Expect to be worked hard in this class. Pay attention to the terms that she gives in class. Try hard and try to attend every lecture. She definitely notices students who put in effort and work hard in her class. Hard work pays off in the end.
i loved the class!
she is hilarious and her class is not hard. just go to class and write really good notes and the midterm will be easy! since the final is not cumulative it is basically another midterm, but with essays that were not hard. she gives you the prompts a week before hand for the inclass final essays so you can plan them and definitely get an A
Although I know some people may say they hated her, I loved her. She's British, so sometimes I had no idea what she was trying to say, but she definitely knew the area and was passionate about her field. Don't get James as a TA...he's TERRIBLE. Attend lecture and an A should be easy.
Helen Morales is the rudest educator I have ever met. She requires lots of reading and her slides are not helpful. Good way to pass the class is attend lecture and write everything she says. The sections were also demanding for a subject that is not that difficult.
She is a terrible teacher. She just blabbers the entire class, and her slides are completely unhelpful. It is pretty easy just very dull and she is rude.
Tragedy in translation. Morales' lectures can be confusing, with lots of tangents and it's difficult to figure out what terms, background material, myths, history are important for supporting analysis of the tragedies. Make sure to have the same translations as she uses-the bookstore slips up so check isbn # she assigns! Still a worthwhile class
