Explores the history and variety of the metaphysical tradition, which is often called "spirituality" in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Though this tradition can stand alone, it often blends with established religions and is sometimes lumped with nonreligion. Readings are primary sources, and they reflect the tradition's diversity. The range of sources shows that metaphysical spirituality's various manifestations share common roots and reflects metaphysical eagerness to appropriate from non-western cultures. Students will learn to recognize a tradition that remains subterranean despite its broad and varied influence.
