Philosophy - PHIL

Introduces students to the evolving realities of the profession of academic philosophy. It orients students towards success in the Ph.D. program milestones: the qualifying paper, prospectus development, and completion of the dissertation. It also imparts skills that go beyond graduation, such as preparing a CV, crafting a syllabus, delivering research talks, and writing proposals for grants and fellowships. In the course of covering these topics, the class will also provide a forum for students to reflect on issues in academia more broadly. These include pedagogical innovation, work/life balance, the current state of the discipline, the purposes of the university, and how best to support our diverse undergraduate population.
