Film and Media Studies - FAMST

Introduces students to the media of the New Deal and Great Depression in conjunction with the social, political, and economic conditions of the period. Students explore major developments in Hollywood, social documentary filmmaking and photography, government filmmaking, radio broadcasting, and theater. Students will also examine histories of specific New Deal programs, such as the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps. The course will conclude by reflecting on contemporary afterlives of and responses to the New Deal. These include but are not limited to policy proposals and political frameworks like the Green New Deal and Red Deal for Indigenous people.

Prerequisites: Film Studies 46 or upper-division standing.
