Environmental Science & Management - ESM

Examines the science of fisheries conservation for management. Most of the world’s fisheries are small-scale and data-limited, executed without much support from local governments. Students will explore theory and learn techniques to manage small-scale, data-limited marine fisheries, receiving training necessary for practitioners able to organize communities, conduct quantitative assessments, and assist in implementing sustainable fisheries practices and related institutions. These objectives will be met mainly by learning the Length-Based Spawning Ratio (LBSPR) process, a life-history based approach that includes aspects of fish ecology, physiology, population dynamic modeling, and social science, especially Change Management.

Prerequisites: ESM 201, 203, and 202 (may be concurrent).
