Environmental Studies - ENV S

Dams, reservoirs, and other large water infrastructure play a critical role in meeting human water needs and generating hydropower. However, they also profoundly reshape river systems, disrupt ecosystems, and impact human communities—often with disproportionate effects on marginalized groups. This course takes a holistic look at the benefits and challenges of water infrastructure through case studies of major river basins. We explore quantitative methods for assessing environmental, social, and cultural impacts, and approaches for balancing development with sustainability. Students analyze the legacy of past infrastructure projects and consider pathways for more sustainable water infrastructure paradigms in the future.

Prerequisites: Environmental Studies 2; Environmental Studies 40 (may be taken concur rently); Mathematics 2B, or 3B, or 34B, or Mathematics 34A and Environmental Studies 25.
