W&L CS 160LJ, Linguistic Justice, focuses on how Writing Studies as a discipline approaches issues of language with a focus on justice. Rhetoric is such a key part of Writing Studies, so we will look at rhetorical situations that deal specifically with linguistic choices and expectations. Because this class will be taught at UCSB, which has both HSI and AAPI designations, we will investigate the linguistic injustices facing these communities and others in US classrooms, communities, and the larger political sphere. Issues of accessibility will also be addressed. Students can expect to read a mixture of public and academic scholarship on these topics and to engage in written genres that address both audiences.
