The objective of this course is to familiarize students with ceramic materials used in state-of-the-art Li ion batteries and that can enable advanced electrochemical technologies such as solid-state and electrical grid batteries. The course will briefly cover fundamental aspects of ceramics and their processing, solid-state electrochemistry, and the design, manufacturing, and characterization of state-of-the-art Li ion and advanced battery concepts. Depending on class size, hands-on learning activities may be planned for the end of the semester where students or student teams will learn how tomake and electrochemically characterize Li ion and Li metal electrodes withconventional liquid electrolytes and/or solid-state electrolytes.
