Introduces the multidisciplinary field of planetary health, which is concerned with the health of human civilization and the state of the natural systems on which it depends. Explores linkages and feedbacks between environmental degradation, global change and human health and well-being, including infectious and non-infectious disease, diets and nutrition, and mental health, among other topics. Students learn how to analyze and quantify these linkages between human health and environmental change through course assignments. Finally, the course explores proposed solutions to jointly improve environmental and human health outcomes.

Prerequisites: Completion of, or concurrent enrollment, in ESM 201, ESM 206, and ESM 263.
