CollegeLove doesn't do the course material justice. We read great texts but class discussions were sub-par and demanded very little analytical thinking. He had very low standards for writing and tests were very easy (the average grade for our last 2 exams was above a 95). Sociology is a great discipline but I wouldn't recommend Love if you want to learn.
Great class, great teacher, never dull, great films, I learned a lot, he is easy to approach, funny and passionate about the subject, if you can, take his class. The tests are not easy, so read and study, go to class
I am in Love with Professor Love! He has been my favorite teacher at UCSB so far. I took his class last spring and it was awesome, I learned so much from him! The material was dense but he made it pretty easy to understand. There were two essays that just asked to write about our experiences with race. Take his classes!
Professor Love is helpful when approached, fair on exams, and laudably up-to-date on current events. One 7-10 paper. He tries to make class interactive. Teaches mostly from the text, as textbooks form the backbone of the course (Giddens and Massey). It wasn't a life-changing class, but it was solid material with a respectable lecturer.
Sure, he makes lots of jokes, but they're quite dull and off topic. He was not inspiring, passionate, or deep. Much of the class time he spends letting the students talk about what they're thinking. Very easy class, tests straight from the lecture. Rather boring.
So everyone below says Love's class was easy? Not this Spring, the midterm was ridiculous, class average on that was a D. And he refused to curve that test too. I got a B on the midterm, but thats even after studying all night. Makes no sense, maybe he saw this sight and felt like he had to be harder.
