Covers basic thermodynamics, the role of chemistry and mechanics in thermodynamics, and the issue of kinetics when the system is not in thermodynamic equilibrium. Emphasis will be placed on the thermodynamics of deformable solids, with mechanical stress, chemical reactions, other chemical phenomena, and species transport included in the formulation. As indicated above, examples will be selected from oxidation and corrosion, electrochemical energy conversion and storage, the behavior of gels and elastomers, biological cell mechanics, and other topics.

Amazing lecturer- one of the best I've had at UCSB in Mechanical Engineering. Pretty funny and laid-back too. The class was only based on homeworks and a few labs where you learn and use ABAQUS.

McMeeking is a laid back and funny professor. Statics is really interesting. He gives you the bare basics in lecture and gives long homework assignments that can be quite challenging. Tests were very difficult not for their content, but because small mistakes are easy to make and the ta's do not give adequate partial credit.

Pretty boring professor. Lectures weren't bad but not too helpful. Homeworks are given every week and it takes quite a time to finish it. Midterms were okay but final was extremely hard. His grading criteria is super strict.

tests are hard and rushed for time, but if you really understand all the hw and lecture material you'll be fine. He pulls questions directly from lecture and hw. Solid lecturer, cool accent

Doesn't teach, just derives a lot of equations and in the end you don't know what's the derivation or the formula you need to use. Says tests are straightforward like home work but according to TAs gives us problems that are supposed to "scare us". Terrible grading and he doesn't allow notes or full use of a calculator for a college level ME course

He's a great guy. The class is very easy if you do all the homework.
