Optical techniques encompass a wide variety of tools for materials characterization. After reviewing light-matter interactions and optical properties of materials, this course surveys a selection of optical techniques commonly used in materials science, including optical conductivity, Raman and IR spectroscopy, the magneto-optic Kerr effect, and photoemission spectroscopy.
