Gastronomy and sensory neuroscience share a fundamental interest in perception. In this course, we discuss recent progress made in our understanding of the molecular and cellular inner workings of our gustatory and olfactory systems. We review principles of multisensory integration that affect our everyday life and that are exploited by Michelin star chefs. Finally, we examine how the existence of genetic variability in sensation across individuals can explain differences in the way we interact with food.

The class comes off very daunting at first but Dr. Louis is very aware of its perception and makes it as fair as it can be with his tests. Lecture heavy imo and it was hard for me to stay engaged during them but the video lectures were 80% of what I needed to be successful. Section, TAs, LAs were so helpful! Not my fav biochem class but v doable.

honestly think he doesn't get enough credit for how much he does for this class. very nice man who tries to understand where we get confused and his tests are very fair because he understands most people are new to coding and less familiar with calculus. material was fairly interesting but maybe not for everyone

108C seems irrelevant to biology and the biochemistry series. Prof makes everything math based and none of this seems to apply to real life. Posts online lectures in addition to in person lectures doubling the time commitment per week. Too much work and none of the material is applicable to biochemistry - maybe to bioinformatics.

Awful professor. Expects everyone to be an expert in coding and calculus and doesn't accommodate for those who aren't. Posts lecture videos to watch outside class, then lectures the entire class period, then assigns coding and quizzes. Expectations for the midterms are wildly unclear. If you don't have coding experience- buckle up.

Louis genuinely wants everyone to succeed. I was terrified going into this class bc I had no coding experience and hadn't taken calc for 2+ years. Definitely challenging and forces you to think and approach problems differently, but I really felt like I improved over the quarter and was able to walk away with an A. Put in the work & you'll be ok

This professor is truly an angel. The class is extremely challenging, but if you are struggling, talk to him and he will guide you and help you find a way to get through it.
