Explores how fantasy literature imagines the life we share with others. It considers how modern fantasy looks beyond what seems most obvious and allows for different ways of relating to the world. It also examines fantasy's concern to create beings and ecosystems that do not exist.

CollegeVery interesting course material. All of the texts except for the two full books are posted in canvas. Both of the novels were really engaging. There's 3 reading comprehension quizzes throughout the quarter but as long as you read you'll do well. One big essay at the end of the term. Lecture slides are posted online too.
Professor Shewry is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. She is a phenomenal lecturer and her feedback really strengthened my skills as a writer. I highly recommend this class to anyone, but especially English majors looking for opportunities to be creative and explore a more interesting and dynamic genre in their coursework.
Professor Shewry was amazing! I loved the content of the class, even though it was a lot of reading. It was challenging at times, but it definitely helped me improve my skills as a writer. As an English major, I definitely look forward to taking more classes with her in the future.
Professor Shewry is one of my fav English professors at ucsb. She is such a sweet person and she's really knowledgeable/passionate about the content. The readings can sometimes accumulate but other than that it is a relatively manageable class.
Very sweet professor. Extremely understanding about late work and willing to accommodate students. Lecture slides are posted online, readings are easy and often interesting, quizzes are super easy. Grading is fair.
I liked Prof. Shewry and thought the course was really fun and interesting (especially as a bookworm), but more than anything I wanted to shout out my TA Tim McCarthy who is the actual GOAT. Funny, engaging, and genuinely cares about student wellbeing and success. I'm going to miss him next quarter :)
