Explores the practice of magic in classical antiquity, beginning with the archaic period and ending in the seventh century CE. This historicized survey of practices, laws, and literary representations serves as a springboard for reflecting on magic as a social phenomenon and category of thought, and for discussion of the modern reception and contemporary revivals of Greco-Roman magic.

CollegeYou can tell Professor Dutsch loves what she's teaching. Her lectures were always intriguing & she responded to emails QUICKLY. There were weekly discussions & quizzes both pretty easy. For the final, you could either write a creative essay (your choosing) or propose your own question and use readings from the class to support it. 10/10 recommend
Prof. Dutsch was enjoyable, but I do not recommend this class as a GE unless you have a background in ancient history or greek myth. She teaches towards the classics majors and it's hard to stay focused during lectures. You have freedom on the papers but the final exam required memorization of lots of readings, authors and dates. No thanks.
She is an interesting lecturer. She gets very much into the subject, which makes it enjoyable. However, if you can't understand accents you may have a problem. I didn't but other people said they did. THIS IS A WRITING CLASS, but I think the grading is reasonable. The grading on tests I just don't understand at all...
professor often rushed through slides to finish in time and was disorganized. The study guides helped. Not a lot of writing and readings were discussed in class. She was very passionate and funny
She was nice however some things were disorganized. Our grades only had a few things entered on canvas the whole entire quarter so we couldn't see our accurate grades until they were posted on gold. Lecture attendance was part of our grade but she would give us worksheets in class as attendance and then forget to collect multiple times.
She's absolutely lovely. Quizzes are as easy as she can make them--she wants you to pass. She's very energetic and brings zazz to topics that could otherwise be very dry. If you don't know something when she calls on you, she'll help you out a LOT rather than make you feel embarrassed. I'll miss her class!
