A survey of the American experimental tradition in music and related arts, starting with John Cage and continuing through generations of those have followed in his path through the present day. Students will read primary sources by these artists as well as secondary literature from theoretical and historical perspectives; course activities will also include study and discussion of experimental artworks, written responses, and creative activities.

Prerequisites: Upper-division standing.
