An introduction to the unique techniques and challenges of writing for musical theatre, focusing on the collaborative art of telling a story through music, lyrics, script (the “book”) and dance. A historical overview of musical theater from early operetta to contemporary Broadway and West End hits, will inform our exploration of both the “show” and the “business.” Students will learn foundational vocabulary, analyze how songs advance character and plot, and develop scenes and songs in weekly, hands-on exercises, culminating in a workshop presentation of original works-in-progress.
