We are generating massive amounts of data in our daily digital lives. The ability to understand this data, process it, interpret it, visualize it, and communicate it is an increasingly valuable skill today. These data analytical techniques allow us to make sense of people's behavior in many contexts, like when they communicate online, or when they engage in shopping and commerce, or when they vote in elections. In this class, we will learn some basic methods of conducting Data Science using the Python programming language and discuss important aspects of data ethics, social impact of technology, and data storytelling.

Pandey is one of my favorite professors here at UCSB. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you put in the work you will get a good grade in this class and I have found it helpful to now have a basic understanding of python. Definitely recommend!

Pandey makes something overwhelming like data science + Python coding into something that anyone could understand and maybe even enjoy. I had 0 data science or coding experience before this class. The way that he teaches makes it not scary or overwhelming at all and he could not be nicer. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Kanu is such a kinda and considerate professor. It was his first time teaching the course but he was a great teacher and I learned a lot. Very approachable and the exams were very doable and similar to the study guide. Not a lot of work outside of class and the final group project was not as intimidating as it seemed!

Kanu is one of the best Comm profs I've had :) He is a new lecturer but he is extremely caring towards his students and is absolutely hilarious. Since 187 is "Data Science" Comm, it is heavy on beginner coding and data analysis, but the content/assignments are taught step-by-step and are very doable and easy to master even for coding newbies.

Loved this class and professor. It was his first time teaching and he was so sweet and funny. Class split up into lectures and coding labs. Weekly coding assignments. 3 exams, non cumulative, fairly easy. Study guides cover exactly what's on the tests. Group coding project as final. Kanu and Hannah (TA) were super helpful if you're confused.
