Explores social scientific theory and research on intergroup dynamics and how media representations of diversity affects these relations. In the beginning of the term, we focus on a) social psychological explanations of intergroup dynamics and biases, and b) theories explaining how media affects outgroup perceptions and attitudes. Next, we explore media effects literature on how racial majority and minority groups are presented in the media and the consequences of these portrayals on intergroup relations. Finally, we focus on how the media can be used to promote positive intergroup relations.

CollegeSuper accommodating prof! Her class has lots of assignments but they are not worth a lot of points. That means that if you miss a few, you won't bomb the class. Also, she has a 10 point freebie, no questions asked. Fair, clear, and very professional!
The content was a little dull but super doable. Weekly reading guides and discussion questions for homework, and a couple of group assignments.
She teaches a hybrid style class with Tuesday asynchronous lectures and Thursday in person class. Her in person lectures are very clear and interesting. I am not sure if I like the discussion activities in class as it depends on the group you are sitting with. The quizzes are hard as they cover different types of material.
The entire grade was compromised of weekly quizzes, weekly reading guides and a weekly group discussion. The class material was overall interesting. On Tuesdays we had an asynchronous lecture posted online and then on Thursday a more in depth discussion about the material.
Took her CommW113 class and it was great. Very few Comm profs at UCSB know how to teach an online class well and she is one of the good ones. Pros: very organized, flexible, provides handouts for her slides, caring about accessibility needs. Cons: Lots of low stake assignments every week. Apply it assignments are hard
Easy class as long as you turn in all the assignments. Really apprieciated the hybrid format.
