In depth study of physiology and ecology of microorganisms with a focus on bacteria and archaea. Source material will be a mixture of graduate-level texts, review articles and primary literature. Weekly meetings will be interactive and student-led. Our focus will be on fundamental processes in the metabolism and interactions of microbes (from foundational knowledge to recent discoveries), but we will also analyze the methods used to study these processes in diverse natural ecosystems (e.g. sequencing, bioinformatics, microscopy, stable isotopes).
