In this graduate seminar, we delve into the complex relationship between food and politics in Spain. We explore how food has played a crucial role in shaping the diverse cultures and national identities within the country. Additionally, we discuss topics such as the significance of "national products" and their role in nation branding, as well as the impact of food scarcity during Franco's dictatorship. Our approach will be multidisciplinary, incorporating scholarly books, cookbooks, and other materials to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Furthermore, we will have guest speakers who will share their expertise and insights on the subject.

we watched movies and you only had to write two papers then the final, plus participation. the class workload was doable and the class itself was also. manageable. did not regret coming to class

Prof Grasset is fantastic. I took this course w/ little Spanish speaking skills and he offered all the movies with English subs and let’s you participate in English if you’re not a Spanish major/minor. His guidelines are casual so as long as you prove you’re engaging with the material through the papers and discussions you’ll get an A.

This class and professor were awesome! Relatively simple and straightforward, watched one movie a week, one response paper all quarter, essay-based short and simple midterms and finals. The movies were all cool and for the post movie discussions, Prof Grasset made us think critically which helped me get a lot out of the class.

This course was filled with very interesting films and lectures that covered the films and the readings. Its not so much reading heavy as it is having to write a few papers throughout the course which are not at all hard to complete as its a page or two of writing per submission. Would take again for sure

He's amazing! I've taken SPAN 153, 110C, and 126 with him and he's easily my favorite professor in this department. He cares about his students and values feedback, comments, and questions. His lectures are beyond interesting and if you don't understand something he's able to simplify it even more. Simple midterm and take-home final.

Really good professor. He tries to be funny, is really interesting, and is far from confusing unlike other professors in the department. We had an in-class midterm, a take-home final, and a two reading responses (and an extra credit opportunity!). He does grade on participation and it accounts for 20% of your grade
