This course is a survey of writing genres students will encounter in environmental jobs. Each week will have a unique technical or creative focus, with units spanning science storytelling, literature reviews, policy writing, grant proposals, social media campaigns, environmental poetry and more. Students will read and reflect on examples of effective environmental writing while building their own portfolio of pieces. In lab sections, students will participate in peer review to practice giving and receiving feedback. ESM 437 is designed and recommended for first year MESM students, but is open to all MESM, MEDS, and PhD students at Bren and other departments. Undergraduates with writing experience may petition to enroll.

CollegeI've taken two classes with Amanda, & I can't wait to take a 3rd. For the 1st time, I feel like I'm analyzing relevant issues to my life in conjunction with scholarly articles instead of just regurgitating info. She makes every class engaging, interesting, & encourages class discussion. Helpful, relateable, & a fair grader if you put effort in.
Class is extremely interesting and thought-provking! Just make sure you read EVERYTHING and understand. If you don't understand, just ask her! If you interpret things differently, that okay! Just make sure you know the main points she wants you to know. And make sure you actually play your video game. She will know if you don't.
Amanda is great! She is very helpful during office hours (and even beyond office hours). She is so innovative and intelligent (created a facebook page for participation). She has a super cool personality as well, which makes her section MUCH more palatable.
