Great professor overall, lectures are clear and VERY important. I find it interesting, and it will be for anybody interested in political science or philosophy. However, it is really tough. Read every reading and study well ahead of time, because this class is not a joke, but definitely rewarding if you put in the effort.

Digeser is really into the class, she's very passionate about the subject. If you raise your hand during class she'll definitely remember you and that's good. You really have to pay attention in class to get what she's saying, the material is pretty complex. Midterm wasn't too bad, just repeat everything she says in class and you're good to go.

Definitely do not regret taking this class. She is an amazing professor. She's incredibly passionate about what she teaches and engages with her students. Would definitely recommend this class to anyone.

Exceptional professor. She's lucid and sincerely cares about her students. Class is demanding - a C is average. Tackle the reading first and then let Digeser's lecture help you crystallize your thoughts. Memorizing lecture notes misses the point of the course: Digeser's giving you the tools to think philosophically. The pay-off is immeasurable.

Professor Digeser is an amazing teacher. I had her for Poly Sci 1 and she would get so passionate about the lecture it would make it easy for you to love the class. Ask a lot of questions, she will know your name and that is good. Digeser's class is one where if you attend lecture, you're set for the semester. She covers everything you need to know

Digeser gives extremely good lectures. So good that you don't have to read at all. She makes jokes sometimes and is very friendly and approachable. She had assigned seating and will sometimes call on students to answer random questions, which is what separates the students who read from the ones who haven't. Overall, she is an excellent professor.

Super long and boring class but pretty easy. Reading is not mandatory for the most part, you only really need to use the books for the research paper but other than that, all you really need is to pay attention to lecture notes. Got an A on the midterm, paper, and the final because all you need to do is regurgitate everything she says in class

Very detailed and specific lectures. Lecture attendance and reading is a MUST. Interesting class, but dense & long readings. Grades harshly and unfairly, especially for an introductory class. I studied, attended lectures, read everything, yet got a low C on the midterm. The TAs look for unnecessary specifics and terms in the midterm and final.

ATTEND LECTURE, she outlines and explains the readings, which you still need to do so you can do well on the paper. This class was interesting yet boring at the same time, I hated her monotone voice.

Had her for PS1 and it was difficult but bearable. This class has been brutal, I never understood the reading (and there's a lot of it!). Also be prepared to spend half the class on one thinking while the other two get glossed over. Lecture will clarify the reading but section was the real life-saver.

hard class. Dont take unless u have to. TONS of reading and material is dense. Must go to lecture if u want to do well on the midterm and final (1 each). She was passionate about teaching this class tho

The readings are dense, difficult, and there is a large amount of them. Lecture is not mandatory, but all of the readings are outlined and covered during lecture so attendance is essential (especially if you don't read). The tests (1 midterm and final) were straightforward and all essay questions. No study guides were given out beforehand.

Great professor, great lectures, but the course load is somewhat brutal. There's way too much to be covered in a single quarter and much of the grading leaves one at the mercy of the TAs--get a bad one and you're going to get hit hard.

First, Peter is now Paige. It's been nearly a quarter since I had him/her and I just found out. As someone interested in political philosophy, I liked the class. Lectures are super clear, but readings (Hobbes' Leviathan) are dense.

Gut wrenchingly boring. I wanted to die every time I went to lecture, and I love Political philosophy. Digeser found a way to make me hate it. Midterms and paper are graded harshly, I was told I have an "elementary" understanding of Thomas Hobbes, someone I have researched several times in my academic career and in my own personal time. Avoid!

Realizes this class isn't easy. Bit unfair, just not easy. There's no textbook and you have to read a lot of difficult text. They are explained in lecture and I did get by without reading them but...I've had practice and...it'll be nerve wracking. Lectures are very clear but you ABSOLUTELY must go. The grading tends to be on the harsher side.

FIRST OF ALL, HE IS NO LONGER PETER, HE IS NOW PAIGE. WORST PROFESSOR AT UCSB!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I GOT DOCKED 10% OF MY MIDTERM BECAUSE I FORGOT MY NAME ON ONE OF MY BLUEBOOKS. TOO MUCH TO READ, LECTURE IS MANDATORY, NO STUDY GUIDE, AND SLIDES ARE NOT POSTED ON LINE. DONT TAKE THE CLASS!! HONESTLY, DO YOURSELF THE FAVOR!

I love Digeser. The class is definitely demanding. Most TAs are awesome, but stay away from Kathleen. She is the worst. I heard her say that she hates students. HORRIBLE TA.

LOVED HIM. lectures are a must and he goes over all of the readings in it. A lot of people think the class is hard, and he can be intimidating if your trying to crash but was BY FAR my most fave professor.

First understand the workload required from digiser is big. You must read five books including Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, and Rawls. (Understand all concepts and be able to apply them)He clarifies the reading in lecture so attendence is a must. The tests are easy if you read, but the paper was extreemly demanding and graded hard.

First off Digeser's lectures are really dry but very methodical and easy to follow. His exams were cake but the paper was obscure and graded very harshly. He explains 99% of the reading in lecture and there is quite a bit of reading in this course. Overall Digeser seems like a good prof but I probably won't take any of his classes in the future.

Very hard yet very interesting. Didnt attend lecture but deeply regretted that decision. Good teacher with a good set of TA's, if you are interested int the subject this is a great class to take but get ready to work your butt off. Curves a bit which helps.
