Took last year. Fantastic lectures, readings, good class discussion. Absolutely hated the assignment consisting of class notes. It's drawn-out, doesn't encourage critical thinking or analysis, just writing a load of bulletpoints for credit. Thinking about my own mortality induced more meaningful thought than this lazy assignment. Give us an essay.
Zack is an amazing teacher! This class was the reason I really began to love Sociology. He is very well-spoken and has lots of real-world examples to back up his points. The readings for this class were mandatory, but they were all very short PDFs and easy to read. If you have a chance to take a class with Zack, do it!
Excellent lectures. Prof. King clearly has an in depth knowledge of global issues from historical and philosophical perspectives. If you want to become more articulate and expand the breadth of your understanding of the world. Take a class from Prof. King. Read all assigned article, think seriously about them, and write thoughtfully good grade
Well prepared lectures, provides scholarly relevant articles and opposing critical views for deeper understanding. Class discussions offer chance to learn from the lived experiences of others. Social movements can be complex, but if you read the articles you'll have material to work with for papers. Philosophical dialogue format option appreciated
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken with the amount of work, reading, and time. The weekly 2-3 pg papers were killer. However, this was the most rewarding class I have ever taken. Zach is so passionate and personable and is a really great professor. He makes his lectures really interdisciplinary and interesting. Worth it.
I have a very small handful of favorite professors and Zach is one of them. He's really passionate, the kind of infectious passionate that makes you WANT to attend the nearly three-hour evening lecture he hosts. I'd also recommend visiting his office hours or asking questions in class. He is extremely, Extremely knowledgeable about his subject!
Wow this professor is incredible. He is so genuine and caring and clearly cares so much about the material and his students. Talk to him, ask questions and listen, it is not everyday that you get a professor so knowledgeable and approachable
THE ABSOLUTE BEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT UCSB. Learned ALOT of material and opened my eyes to subjects I've never touched on. This class really makes you think about society and how we are affected by past historical events. Not only is he a great speaker but a great person. Makes subtle jokes but is very respectable. I will miss this class.
great professor but one weekly paper is kinda asking a lot. i appreciate this isnt a class about taking tests but inspires you to consider history and possibly apply it to your own life. the group project was chill. you have to do one presentation in front of the class- but its a good enviornment to do so. i wish there were more videos in class.
Zach is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He genuinely cares about social movements and really knows his material, probably because he has real life experience with activism and has studied theory too. He makes a lot of room for students to discuss things in class and disagree with him or ask questions. I wish he taught more classes here.
Zack is a very passionate lecturer especially about SOC 134 (social movements) because he is active in social movements himself. Weekly papers (2-3pages) about different social movements and all the reading is provided. In addition to the papers your grade consists of participation, a presentation, poster project, & a group project
Cool guy, always willing to help and is really responsive to emails. Was my TA for Soc 1.
Zack is a great teacher and had clear expectations. He also happens to be a super attractive guy...
hes inspirational and an awesome lecturer. I always left section with something unexpected but informative. I'm very interested in climate justice now, I'm glad i took this course early enough as a sophomore.
Zach is incredibly knowledgable, passionate and really encourages everyone to participate and learn. His lectures in section were fascinating I actually found myself wishing they were longer. EVS 134EC is kind of depressing, however it's a must even if you are a BS Environmental Studies major.
Best TA I've had at UCSB!! Knows the material but more importantly he really cares about the world outside the classroom and pushes you to ask questions about it. Earth In Crisis is a depressing class, but he makes you leave wanting to change the world and feeling like you can. And he deserves like three chili peppers.
really good TA
