Took him in Spring 2021 for SOC 139C. One of the nicest and most understanding professors I've ever had. Don't hesitate to reach out to him about any assignments or papers; he's super helpful! There were a lot of videos to watch during the lectures, but they related to class discussion. Like I said, one of the best professors I've had.
Spends 2 of the 3 hours in class showing documentaries every week, so boring. Overly-intellectual and expects you to understand really dense content. Forces 10.5 font and sometimes single spacing for assignments making page limit impossible to reach. Refuses to use Gauchospace which forces you to save every email, very unorganized.
Lecture is 3 hours long. Lots of reading. Two papers that are 8 pages (10.5 font/double spaced). He's a very considerate professor.
Daniel says he hates this website but his high rating is well deserved. He has been teaching the same multiracial identities class since 1989 and does a superb job. I would highly suggest taking a class of his.
Great course, great teacher who is very passionate about the subject. Class is not easy but if you attend lecture, get involved in discussions, and do the readings you can learn a lot from it. One of my favorite courses/professors at UCSB
WHAT I WISH I KNEW BEFORE THE CLASS. He has a different style of teaching. Class is structured like giant discussion forums. This is not a class for ppl who want a chill "cookie-cutter" class that is straightforward. No lectures/slides. The lecture is unstructured/informal Lots if reading. Last paper due wk 10! Final was due mon AFTER finals week.
Professor is INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT!!! I cannot stress this enough. By far one of the hardest classes I have ever taken at UCSB. He is VERY PASSIONATE about what he is teaching and has a lot of personal stories to back up the theories being taught. But the reading is IMMENSE (2 GIGANTIC readers + 1 textbook = 500+ pages of reading per week)
This professor really knows his stuff, I heard his theory classes are a bit tougher, however he is very understanding and work can be turned in late. Class is always interesting and exciting, he is a great professor. Take him!

Most amazing class I've ever taken. Discussions are so interesting and grade is based completely on papers. This man will blow your mind...
His teaching skills are different from what you are used too. Whats nice is that the whole class is graded on the papers. While attendance is not checked I still went everyday because he tried to include you in the class and makes it interesting. You leave thinking about the topic you are talking about and later in life situations it comes up.
He is the most amazing professor I have EVER had. He opens your mind to ideas and has forever changed the way I see the world. I am forever grateful for that.
He is definately challenging in work load, but the material he provides is very one sided and one dimensional. I highly recomend writing opposing arguments in the papers he grades them better and you learn more.

I love Prof Daniel. What a good fella, and he really wants his students to do their best. Consequently, he is very demanding, but he reasons with people, and doesn't hold anything against them. If you show improvement, and participate, he takes that it into consideration. Also, he's quite funny. While he talks a lot, it's usually an amusing trip.
Professor Daniel. Amazing! Let's just say I came out of his class so challenged, so charged, so passionate about learning that even till this day, I can't stop writing and thinking critically about the pressing issues he's raised about human existence. Unbelievable professor!!!
Honestly the best professor at UCSB, if you are remotely interested in Sociology or any topic involving Race, Identity, Multiracial Identity and similar topics, take any class with him (I recommend Soc 139C) he is awesome!
