He was really funny and ridiculously intelligent. The first couple lectures were really hard, but he always makes interesting points. I was in his honors section and he was really engaging with us. I really enjoyed his ridiculous laugh and the fact that he laughs at his own jokes. Take his honors section if you get the chance.
This guy is something else. He shows up late to lectures, has a big ego, and is highly amused by his own jokes. When he starts lecturing though, you start to see that he is highly intelligent and really knows his S#^! He can be very funny but also very condescending to students. God help you if you become one of his "victims" !!!!!
This guy is Bob Sagets twin brother, but not as funny. Go to lecture, take notes and the class is simple. Avoid being the person who responds to his "jokes", he will bury you.
I love Prof. Maslan! Some of the comments I read had me worried, but he's fantastic. He pointed out significance in the novels where I missed it and made me think. Also, the reading was actually interesting. He loves to joke and keeps you entertained, though he does like to poke fun at students. His exams were more than fair.
honestly, he's a social guy. As for teaching, relies too much on his power points which he reads verbatim. Show up, take notes on terms and his lectures you will be fine, assuming you have a good TA. Mine was terrible, but Show up to lecture, take notes, but most of all Read all the books. 75% of the tests is just on content, easy points!
He is super funny, he makes lectures very interesting. But he will point students out if they are talking or on the phone in class. His midterm papers are difficult but exams are straight forward.
I think he is a great professor. He is really funny and keeps class entertaining, I just found out I am taking another course with him and I am really excited for it because I like the way he teaches.
Very funny guy! Guaranteed to laugh at least once per lecture. Sometimes space out in class, but the TAs are great and the midterm was easy- just pay attention to the main themes he talks about
Maslan is a super funny and engaging professor. The material is a bit dense, but he helps you though it in his organized lectures. He's busy, so don't expect a lot of help outside of class, but if you catch him just afterwards, it helps a lot. Take good notes and insert them somehow into your papers and you'll get an A.
I honestly thought i was going to hate this class. He scared two thirds of people away on the first day. I actually ended up learning a lot about essay composition, literary theory, philosophy, and he acknowledges when material is difficult or seemingly pointless. Nice guy and very personable, take his classes he's underrated!

He kind of grew on me as the quarter went on, but this was still one of the more painful classes I've taken. His "discussion" questions invite only one correct response and overall, it's just incredibly boring as he thumbs through his notes to make irrelevant points. Find a way to get on his good side and he'll give you an A.
He never has time for you outside of class. He hardly answers your email or appointment requests. The reading was easy but his grading was extremely harsh, that was the overall opinion in the class. Don't ever take his class unless you absolutely have to. Of all the english classes, this was the worst.
Maslan has a very dry, pithy & annoying sense of humor and a very significant lack of teaching skills. Thanks for reading us your notes, not being available outside of class, and being late everyday. You were not engaging or enthusiastic at all. This was the worst, most awkward & boring english course I've taken at ucsb in 3 years.......
Don't do it. Takes Role everyday, very boring unorganized lecture, asks stupid questions to the class sparking boring discussions. Ive looked at the clock more in this class than the professor
so far, i'm really finding his class to be pretty dull...my heart's just not in it, but i mostly blame the dry material for this and my senioritis. he does have a great sense of humor, but the laugh kind of scares me... i'm hoping the rest of the quarter is tolerable
He is very intelligent, but also very condescending if you don't give him the answer he wants. Lectures are extremely boring; he does nothing but read straight from his notes. A lot of reading, but only two papers and a final.
Incredibly knowledgeable, has a sense of humor. And, yeah, love that laugh...
The classes that I took with Maslan were the most fun. If you can't handle your intelligence being insulted, don't take this class! His dry wit and brilliance made me look forward to this class every day.
Actually interesting for a survey course!
Seminars with Maslan are great! I think it easier to get past the turtlenecks when you listen to his chuckle. :P
His lectures ramble on forever and are loaded with totally obvious points. Not much original thinking. What's with the turtlenecks? Is he Seinfeld's long lost brother?
I love this teacher. He made a survey course fun. Great laugh and you are gauranteed to laugh in his class. A little unorganized and absent minded but great guy all around.
Maslan is interesting, intelligent and has a great, but stinging sense of humour. Wonderful to take a senior seminar with.
