Dr. Katz is by far my favorite professor at this school. He is the biggest music history nerd on the planet and has a lot of cool stories. Definitely pay attention during lecture and take super detailed notes!!! He doesn't grade anything personally, so grading depends on your TA, but include the stuff he talks about in essays and youll be fine.
He's a great professor!! Not only is he clear and to the point, he's funny and tries to make the material interesting to learn. He also engages students by showing clips as well as informational slideshows which he uploads on Gauchospace. I adore the man, he's a hard-working, fun lecturer who brings a lot of energy!
Amazing professor. Seriously the best one I've ever had. I would've dropped the class (not my major) but the lectures were just so interesting that I kept showing up. Great class, tested us on exactly what he taught us, no ambiguity. Would take 20 more times if I could.
He's absolutely amazing! Not only is the material really easy and interesting, he teaches in a very clear, articulate manner, simplifying the information for the class as well as making people laugh. As long as you go to lectures (though it's not mandatory and you can get by without them), you should have no problem aceing his midterm or final.
Try to get Melissa Rapp as a TA. She made this class for me. Professor Katz was a good lecturer too. I barely went to class but kept up with the readings and listenings. Got a solid A. Good class to take for sure.
Take this class! Professor Katz is amazing. He knows absolutely everything and anything about classical music. I took this class because it was an easy GE, but I ended up liking music a lot more. His exams are not hard, and you watch videos in the class.
he made this quarter extremely easy. No textbook was needed, just had to read 2-3 short online articles weekly for section assignments that you could do in 30 minutes. 2 easy papers. Easy midterm, he posted possible essay questions on gauchospace beforehand. take this class with him if you can :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Not the expected "easy A", but relative to my other science classes, it was pretty easy. I thought Katz was pretty likable, though I can understand why some people find him annoying. Having a good TA helps a lot too (I had Emma). I ended up getting an A and never read the text book once. Just know the music & slides
Somehow, this course got into everyone's minds as an "Easy GE". Not easy but not difficult either. Professor is annoying and seems to like talking to himself. Few go to lectures because everything learned in lecture can be learned from book + listenings. Need to be able to identify pieces so need to memorize a bit. Essays and quizzes were okay.
Quite possibly one of the most annoying human beings I have ever met. Completely full of himself and pretentious, ego bigger than the sun. Reminds me of the nerdy guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Unless you are a music major nerd dont take this class.
Professor Katz is awesome! He knows EVERYTHING, and he doesn't push his point of view. He's really funny and keeps you interested in lectures. He cares a lot more about primary sources than the textbook.
Made a huge mistake in taking this class, thought this would be a study of all music but instead was only classical. If that's interesting to you then by all means go for it. Professor is clear and knows what he's talking about, just depends whether you can take listening to him talk about classical music or not.
Best professor I've had so far. I always looked forward to going to class, he kept what could have been a boring subject interesting. In virtually every class he or the T.A's played an instrument. Easy class and he was very approachable and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this class
Katz is a great professor. His lectures combine just the right amout to sarcasm with information so you don't get bored. Be prepared to study CLASSICAL music. A lot of my friends weren't aware that they'd be listening to Beethoven and Mozart when they enrolled. 40 mc midterm, 50 mc final. 2 compare/contrast essays and 2 concert reports.
Katz is by far the best teacher in the music department. His lectures are extremely clear and very interesting. He had a gift for teaching, so I highly recommend his classes. Also he knows about EVERYTHING, just ask, it's amazing. His expectations are very high, but reasonable and if you read and attend lecture, you will do well in his class.
katz is the man. lectures are inspired and well organized, tests are fair, and his material and angle are approachable. really nice guy.
Professor Katz made this class very interesting and fun. He is a good lecturer and the tests and assignments are very fair. Very funny too.
One of the best instructors I have had in college. His expectations are reasonable and his lectures are crystal clear. You will work hard, but you will gain inestimable knowledge & skills. Also a wonderful person!
great lectures, funny guy, but grading was a bit strange...
class seemed easy, but discussion level was low. grading was not understandable.
A nice guy, but unexperienced as a pedagogue. He let the discussion level drop to zero, and towards the end of the quarter, some no-brainer studs basically ruled the class. Weird grading, too. A little disappointing after what I had heard about him...
