Great teacher, really entertaining. I would go to class since his lecture slides don't make much sense unless they're explained. His midterm was easy, but long, so be prepared. His final was incredibly involved - you need to incorporate everything from the entire quarter (it took about 4 hours). He's very fair, and wants his students to do well
One of the best teachers in the MCDB department. do the problem sets! will appear on the midterms and finals. when he says don't memorize, ur going to have to memorize. really helpful, see him in office hours. he's good at remembering names. 1 midterm 33% and final 66%. really fair tests, not easy but not extremely hard. take this class!
unclear lecture notes. full of surprises and not a good study of biochemistry. Final exam was VERY long and worth about 67% of the grade. I got a b- on the midterm, but got the final grade of A-... Still don't think he was good.
Very Interesting class, the best class I have ever taken @ UCSB
Do Lew's problem sets. At least you know you can get these right on the midterm and final. Hard to put concepts together because his reader is very scattered, but most put a lot of time and effort to do well in his class.
he is very good and funny... materials in this class r very interesting(if u r intersted in exercise stuff). only get to take one midterm and the final...however, final was pretty hard and extremely long, so be prepared (midterm was fairly easy)
Interesting and useful material. He can be VERY tricky on exams. Do problem sets, see him at his office hours. I advise not memorizing the material but to actually integrate and connect EVERYTHING. Tough but very interesting
Lew's a really nice guy and he made the class interesting, unlike 108A with Sears. You HAVE to do the problems sets to do well on the exam.
I had him for MCDB 108B as well and honestly love him. He's really good at explaining complex concepts in an easy to understand way and for the lab class (granted it was all online due to COVID) he did a great job at teaching us important lab techniques even though we were unable to be in the lab. Definitely one of the better upper div professors
he was bad.
The class itself is not too difficult. If you run out of time for studying, I would definitely recommend just going over problem sets that he has online. They appear almost word for word on his exams. TIME is a huge constraint in his class when taking exams, so know the material well. Lew is a really good guy, and easy to talk to.
here's how to get an A: for the midterm, do ALL of the problem sets, because they'll show up on the midterm... VERBATIM. final: problem sets + everything else. it's long, i stayed 4 hours... be prepared, or u'll loose the easy A u got on the midterm. he's very helpful at office hours, and know his reader inside and out, no need for lehinger.
