Hilter is inspiring and brilliant!! If you arent interested in environmental issues, i dont recommend taking this course. BUT... if you are, DO IT! Hiltner gave me a new perspective on the environment, and Im vegan as a result.
Hiltner is an AMAZING professor. Truly cares about what he teaches and the students. ENG22 is one of the easiest GEs you can take, entire grade based on iclicker, midterm, and final. If you show up to lectures, take good notes, and study a decent amount you will easily get an A. Material is interesting and he is engaging. Reading-heavy, but doable.
Prof Hiltner is inspiring, passionate, and intelligent. Every Friday until midterm is dedicated to climate change, which personally made me go vegan. Although some lectures are boring bc it's ancient literature, Hiltner clearly knows what he is talking about. Slides are available on Prezi and midterm/final are somewhat difficult if you don't read.

Very good communicator. 30% attendance, so do yourself a favor and show up. 35/35 midterm final. Passable with minimal reading but the assignments are pretty light and I shouldve been more on top of them. Interesting, passionate, brilliant guy. He changed my view on some things for sure. Enjoyed his lectures. Some say monotone but I didnt notice.
If taking English 22 with Hiltner sit in the front of the lecture hall as Hiltner, while a very nice and respectable teacher, has a very monotone voice that can be boring to listen to for an hour. Do all of the readings as the tests have some questions on very specific aspects of the readings, and study his prezi's! If so, you'll do great!
Honestly one of the best professors here. I was so inspired from ENGL122EA and it changed my perspective on a lot. Class entirely based off of students presenting in class on a topic followed by a group discussion, so you had 2 group presentations a quarter that were not that difficult plus a final project. Great class even if not engl major
Passionate lecturer, very positive and inspirational. Content is interesting and he posts the lecture slides online which are rich in depth. Downsides are that you are only being graded off attendance (mandatory), midterm, and final. Some questions were very specific. Uses alot of "All of the above, A & B, etc" options on majority of questions.
Really great lecturer. All lectures/slides are clear, concise, and relevant to the topic. It is very obvious that Prof. Hiltner has a genuine passion for what he teaches, which is refreshing. You will have to read (or thoroughly skim) a LOT though, but it's honestly worth it just for the great content of the class.
Fun lectures! Material makes you rethink a lot of values you might hold about the environment. Always looking for student feedback and engaging the class. Graded by a midterm, final, and attendance, the first two being easy if you regularly show up and read. It makes me upset that people leave class early... please be kind to this wonderful human!
Great lecturer although he does have a monotone voice. English 22 is a great mesh between environmental science and literature.
This is why you go to UCSB. You get a great location and still get taught by a Harvard Ph.d. Who needs Harvard!
Discussion based classes looks for student feedback and is very inspiring. Make sure to ask him for his background and his experiences because it was definitely unique and inspiring to hear!
Hiltner is an amazing professor. He fosters genuine discussion and really cares about what he imparts to his students. This class isn't difficult grade-wise, but it is worth investing your time and effort in, if you care.
Easy pass, not an easy A. Lecture has iClicker and his monotone voice and content makes the lecture hard to pay attention to. Oddly specific on exams, but did curve both exams. Movies played on Fridays. Wouldn't really suggest taking it for a letter grade or if you don't have to take it for a GE.
one midterm one final. BORING lecture, very hard to stay awake because of his voice but the material itself it wasnt too bad, but make sure to do the reading and use quizlet.
If you do the reading and pay attentions to lectures, You will get an A. Attendance is 20% of your grade, and the rest of the grade is 1 midterm and 1 final. Documentaries every friday. Boring lectures, but sometimes interesting material. I barely read, but I knew the lectures very well. Do the reading and you will get a great grade. Easy P/NP.
Ken is very nice but speaks in an extremely monotone voice which makes lectures even more boring than the content already is. The tests are rather specific but he does curve!!
Professor Hiltner is such a kind person and you can tell he truly cares about the course material which is always a bonus. The class was graded 20% on attendance, 40% midterm, and 40% final. For both the midterm and the final the only studying I did was about 4 hours the day before, rereading the prezi. Make sure to pay attention and youll pass.
This class is an easy pass but I wouldn't say an easy A. His tests were surprisingly specific, with questions I wouldn't have even thought to study. Exams are only 50 questions each, so there wasn't a lot of room for error, causing me a very borderline B+. He is a nice guy, has a voice of a yoga instructor.
Personally, that class was really boring and he always talked in a monotoned voice which made it worst. I tried really hard to study for that class and I did all the readings, attended the lectures and I still ended up with a C. It's only an easy class if you understand what he's talking about. I would definitely just do a pass or no pass .
took his class in the summer but I highly recommend him! obviously you have to do the reading (it's an English class, its a must) but the midterm and final were both straight forward. come to class daily and do the readings, then you'll do fine. his tests are pretty easy if you did the reading. got a B+ in his class with just doing the readings.
Very interesting topic, sometimes interesting lecture. Reading is a must and attending movie days is a must (dont say you will watch it on your own bc you know you wont). Loads of the questions off the midterm and final are based on the reading and movies, not everything is covered in lecture. Attended the honors section which was just a discussion
Ken is an AMAZING professor. His lectures are very organized and clear. He is always open to answer questions that students have. The class is not hard to get an A as long as you look over the slides and the readings. Watching the movie also helps. He is an awesome professor and I definitely recommend him.
