This graduate seminar explores a range of theoretical and empirical debates that bear on the question of what imperialism is, how it functions in relation to capitalism, the state, and class relations, and its relevance as an analytical category in the contemporary global order. Topics for reading will include the historical linkage between racial capitalism and empire, the impact of capitalist development on societies around the world, whether and how imperialism can be exercised through non-territorial rule after the age of formal empire, the extent to which the contemporary capitalist system is governed by imperial relations or something more multipolar in form, and how these concerns matter for achieving a more just society.

CollegeEngaging classes, many opportunities to discuss material, and she really tries to create a "classroom" environment. It's not just a lecture. Go to class as there are participation "quizzes." Do readings and you will do fine. Midterm, paper, final + some EC. Overall, one of the best professors I've had here. Sad she's leaving.
Pretty good professor and alright introduction to the Global Studies major. The readings were very important, and overall it seemed that she cared very much about her students and the class. This class was more interesting than GLOBL 1, for sure, and all the TA's were fantastic.
SHE IS A DIVa, unfortunately not teaching anymore here in UCSB
This professor pushes propaganda under fake academic teaching and discriminates heavily against people with opposing political views
Professor Chua is probably THE best professor I've had in my time at UCSB- definitely take 130 with her if you have the chance! Attendance isn't mandatory per se, but there are a handful of pop quizzes given during lecture so it's good to show up. She's so wonderful and makes an effort to get to know all their students even in a large lecture.
Best professor I have ever taken, 10/10. Her lectures are genuinely interesting and teach about the current state of the world. The pp-quizzes are light if you did the readings (and pretty forgiving even if you didn't). Tests are graded harder than the quizzes, but still completely doable. Couldn't recommend Chua enough!
