CollegeWaid's a genius. This Faulkner seminar is one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken... but I've now read more Faulkner than most of the world ever will (5 novels). One 9-page paper (6-page draft) and a 3hr final. Read as much as you can, but Sparknotes can save you during lectures.
It's been two decades since I took Candace's classes but I was looking through some old things, found a reader (and a painful essay we won't be talking about), and went down memory lane. Candace was one of my faves at UCSB and I think I took four classes from her. Highly recommend Faulkner or anything from the American South. Delightful woman.
Incredibly unhelpful and at times demeaning. Has nothing relevant to say about novels in class, and is a walking "Uhm actually" charicature. Skip her and take literally anyone else.
TA barely graded anything until the last few weeks, prof submitted grades almost 2 weeks late. Disputed 'inflated' 'wrong' online grades of 90-100% and just straight up removed a letter grade from other people I talked to. 100% gets an A-, etc. Reading (800+ pages) wasn't really needed. Attendance was threatened but not taken in a 200 person room.
You have to be able to speak the language of Prof. Waid. She is kind, intelligent, & inspiring. What hurt me was to see the level of disrespect from the class toward her (laughing at her when she gets passionate). This class is NOT an "easy A". If you are planning to take this class to fulfill some requirement, I would recommend a different one.
Professor Raley was ok, the class itself wasn't hard, it was hard to pay attention. I felt like she treated the class as if it wasn't a GE and we were all English majors. Overall just make sure you have an understanding of the assignments and you'll do good. Also attendance is mandatory for section, and missing more than 2 will affect your grade.
